Tobermory Cat was created as an evolving interactive artwork on facebook. The work is about the creation of celebrity. Why create a famous cat character? Fame is strange and powerful stuff. A cat is like many other cats but due to fame it is different.
An interactive paparazzi photo stream showing the life of Tobermory Cat will grow into a playful soap opera documentary of a cool cats life. The hope is to have Tobermory Cat fans create and update the photo steam on facebook.We created the term paparazzi cat snapper to transform the simple taking of a picture of a cat into a celebrity photographing experience.
Like any story we needed some drama so decided to exaggerate, by photographic means, something which most cats will do - sometimes sleep in the middle of the road. Besides drama we have created the personality type " hero cat lifter" - these are people who are instinctively drawn to look after the cat by lifting it into a safe place.
Like a huge number of cats, Tobermory Cat sometimes sits on car roofs. Tobermory Cat Management has transformed this ordinary fact into a celebrity feature. Because Tobermory Cat is famous, he has become the worlds premier car surfing cat. We transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.
Lee Mack seen here up in the arts district of Tobermory promoting our first product: "Tobermory Cat String" - a piece of string with a Tobermory Cat designer label attached. Lee Mack is saying "Remember,its not just any string, its Tobermory Cat designer label string. The idea is based on T shirts costing £4 being sold at £45 simply because they have a designer label. We like the idea so much we did it with string. Thanks to Lee Mack who, during a visit to T.C. offices, was generous enough to go with our curious request to hold up a piece of string having been assured that the intention was a bit arty,playful, involved a cat and nothing unpleasant was going on. Nice guy.
